In the clip I posted the other day with Dorothy Jane Torkelson, she says, "I guess you can't have absolute joy without absolute despair." It's horrible, but there is an aspect of love that isn't any fun. The break-ups, disappointments, unrequited love, and other unpleasantries that sometimes occur in a relationship are difficult, but it's amazing to see something go from so bad to beyond what had been imagined. As far as storytelling goes, real or fiction, the triumph over the hard times is one of the best things to watch!
This is a part of the movie "Sense and Sensibility" from the 1995 version. Kate Winslet is so completely amazing in it. You truly believe that her heart has just been shattered into a million pieces as she goes into the shock of her rejection, then weakly attempts to defend Willoughby, but finally breaks as she realizes all her hopes are crumbling down around her. And then Mrs. Jennings comes in and her help is no help at all! The writing and acting in this scene are superb. As Marianne crys, you want to cry. Very sad, but very romantic. Especially when you think about the fact that Marianne is such a romantic herself with all the poems and novels she reads.
(If you don't want to watch all 9 plus minutes, Marianne sees Willoughby at the dance at about 3:20 and reads his letter at about 7:30. But really, the whole thing is great!)
